What is a headache?
A headache is a pain in the head which can range from a slight ache that makes life a bit dreary, but does not seriously affect
concentration, to a pain so disabling that the thought process is severely disturbed and the sufferer is completely prostrate.
The degree of pain is usually determined by the amount of swelling in the soft tissue of the head. It is easy to see why this
can be so agonizing: if your arm needed to swell it is free to do so, but since the brain is confined by the bony case of
the skull there is no relief until the swelling subsides. Common descriptions of headaches suggest this pressure: 'I thought
my head would split', 'I felt as though my head was in a vice.'
What is a headache saying?
A headache is the head saying that you are subjecting it to conditions it cannot tolerate. A mild headache may be saying,
'Can't you do something about this?'; a severe headache caused by poisonous fumes may be saying 'Get out of here, your life
is in danger.'
Headaches don't descend on us without reason and you may have to accept that, however unwittingly, you are actually causing
yours. This will become clearer as you understand the needs of the head:
Normal circulation
Nourishment
The correct balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide
Absence of toxic substances.
In a healthy person it is unlikely that a headache would develop if these needs are met. Headache can be due to anxiety. Check
